LulaWatch Focusing on Latin America’s
new “axis of evil”
1. Declining Popularity Just over two months into President
Luiz Inácio Lula
da Silva's administration, analysts have noted signs pointing
to a rapid decline of its image and popularity.
2. Gag Order on Employees Meanwhile the Workers Party (PT) government takes increasingly
authoritatian measures such as a gag order on presidential
palace employees forbidding them to talk about government
plans or actions.
3. Lula Shelters FARC Controversy continues over the Lula
government’s refusal
to declare the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)
a terrorist organization even as the press disclosed the
presence of FARC operatives on Brazilian territory.
The government's foreign policy orientation and its ideological
afinity with FARC causes fresh concerns over possible destabilization
of the region.
4. Liberation Theology Butresses Lula Administration Meanwhile, the Lula da Silva administration knits ever closer
ties with the so-called Catholic left, inspired by Liberation
Theology.
That concludes this issue of LulaWatch. Until next time,
Sincerely yours, C. Preston Noell III
Lula
Fooling the World Lula's party covered up its
historic radicalism during the
elections, but now in power is
gradually re-nationalizing formerly
privatized assets.
Brazil
says NO to Gun Control - October 27, 2005
The international left was monitoring with great expectations the results
of Brazil’s weekend referendum on a nationwide ban on the sale of
guns and ammunition. A Yes vote would have been celebrated as a victory
for gun control not only in Brazil but worldwide.
